Manchester United’s First January Signing Imminent, Major Rivals Drop Interest

Manchester United could be set to make a move for Dimitri Payet after Marseille dropped out of the running due to West Ham’s £30m asking price.

The France international is desperate to leave the Hammers and has refused to play again for Slaven Bilic’s side although the club are reluctant to sell their star man, particularly in January.

Payet had appeared almost certain to return to Marseille with the 29-year-old’s family reportedly unhappy in London and keen to head back to France.

The Ligue 1 side are believed to have made three bids for Payet all of which have been rejected by the Irons.

West Ham are thought to be willing to sell Payet for a fee in the region of £30m although it remains to be seen if Marseille will rekindle their interest.

Despite his stunning season last year, and his impressive performances for his country at Euro 2016, there seems to be a shortage of interest in Payet who has failed to consistently replicate his best form this season.

However, Manchester United could take advantage of that to move for Payet and acquire him for £30m, a reasonable price for such a talented player as it appears he won’t get his wish to return to France fulfilled and seem determined on not to play for West Ham again.

Although Jose Mourinho’s side have plenty of attacking options, the opportunity to snap up Payet is perhaps one that is too good to pass up and there is certainly space in the squad following the departure of Memphis Depay.

While West Ham are reluctant to sell they may have little choice, with Payet seemingly unwilling to play again and there being little point in keeping an unhappy player.

The France international’s versatility should mean he is a good fit for Mourinho, able to play centrally or out wide while his ability from set piece would also prove a useful asset for the Red Devils.
