Javier Mascherano along with Neymar (Jr and Sr) along with the president of Barcelona, all have been embroiled in a tax dispute with the Spanish authorities. Even Lionel Messi is untouched. So it was not surprising to hear that the case with the least profile amongst them came to a conclusion.
Mascherano was accused of fraud, hiding income from authorities and had subsequently been served a notice. True to their word, the Spanish authorities went after him and eventually Mascherano has admitted to crime.
It should be no surprise that he has to pay a lot, 816,000 Euros to be precise or 588,00 Sterling at the current rate but the surprising part was that he was also sentenced to an year in prison. It is unprecedented for such a player at such a prestigious club to be convicted of such acts.
As with the elite, he will not actually go to prison by loosening the purse strings. It will cost a lot but for a man who earns upwards of 130,000 pounds a week, it must be a few months’ salary. The ex-Liverpool man would rather pay up than damage the cult status he has received at Liverpool, Barcelona and Argentina. It must be noted that he was the player who caused the ban on third party ownership as an aftermath of his transfer at West Ham.
In summary, Barcelona won’t have more troubles to add to their list but Mascherano definitely has to loosen the purse strings to stay out of prison. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Barcelona in more hot water in the pending cases against their shady activities now that a precedent is set. Also of note is the fact that Spain don’t really take their stand on Catalonian independence very kindly.
