Massive news on Arsene Wenger’s contract situation at Arsenal

Arsenal have apparently stepped up plans to sort out manager Arsene Wenger’s future before the end of this season.

The 66-year-old’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, and as yet his attitude towards committing his future to the club beyond this season has been somewhat nonchalant.

However, it seems that the Arsenal board are keen to get things moving, and Goal have today reported that the club have offered Wenger an extension on his contract.

No details have been released as to the terms of the deal (i.e. the length of the contract), just to say that it would take him past 21 years at the Premier League side, but presumably it would be an extra twelve months.

However, this being Wenger and Arsenal, it’s not quite as straightforward as him signing the deal. Of course, everything is set up for him to do so, but he remains determined to wait until the end of the current campaign before deciding his longer-term future.

Indeed, despite the renewed sense of optimism around the Emirates in relation to this squad and what they can achieve this season, the longer Wenger goes without signing an extension and thereby winding down his current contract, the possibility grows that this could be the manager’s swansong.

Alarmingly for Arsenal, this could have further knock-on effects for the players at the club. As per the aforementioned report, Mesut Özil’s own contract talks are also tied up in this.

The German international’s deal is set to run out in just over 18 months and he is reportedly keen to find out if Wenger will be at the Emirates next year before committing himself on longer terms. It is believed that this, rather than any financial demands, is the main sticking point currently.

Wenger was a big factor in Özil’s decision to join the club and any change in manager could see the 28-year-old decide to depart also, a worry that also exists with Barcelona and Manchester City target Héctor Bellerín.
