In a rare twist of events, Mesut Ozil was one of the few Arsenal players who wasn’t criticised after losing another big game in Europe on Tuesday night.
Of course, he was certainly helped by only entering play in the 72nd minute and the behaviour of Alexis Sanchez on the bench during the 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich.
There were plenty of questions asked about Arsene Wenger’s future and the current dynamics of the Arsenal dressing room following a week where various unsettling reports of unrest were published.
So it was interesting to see how many Gunners stars would feature in Ozil’s favourite world XI.
The answer: not many.
The former Real Madrid star was more inclined to pick his old Bernabeu teammates than his current ones in a video released by Pro Evolution Soccer.
In goal, the German plumped for his international compatriot – and opponent on Tuesday – Manuel Neuer.
In the back four, Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin slots in at right-back alongside a formidable trio of Jerome Boateng, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo.
Ozil picked Luka Modric and Ilkay Gundogan to line up alongside himself in a strong midfield.
Sanchez is the third and final Arsenal star to make Ozil’s XI as he makes up a prolific front three with Madrid forwards Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.
You can see Ozil explain his reasoning for each selection in the video below.
Any chance Ozil is missing Madrid right now perhaps?
And it’s probably worth noting there was no space for Barcelona’s Lionel Messi either.
The 28-year-old is now in his fourth season at Arsenal after leaving the Bernabeu in 2013.
However, like Sanchez and Wenger, his future in north London is unclear as his contract is set to expire at the end of next season and he is yet to commit to extending his stay at the Emirates.
