It will be a historic moment for the fans of Indian football and the experts in general and particularly football lovers in Kolkata when ace club Mohun Bagan at the Saltlake Stadium in Kolkata will host the FC Barcelona Legends on September 28, 2018.
The Barcelona team is expected to be inducted with former World Cup players. They will take on the Legends of Mohun Bagan in Kolkata. It will be another historic moment for fans from Kolkata.
The squads are yet to be named. As per reports in Sportskeeda, Eric Abidal, Gianluca Zambrotta, Edgard Davids and Patrick Kluivert will be flying to Kolkata for the friendly match.
Former Mohun Bagan star Jose Ramirez Barreto will turn up for the club.
It is not the first time Kolkata will host a top team. Oliver Kahn played his last club match for the Bayern Munich in Kolkata.
The Eden Gardens have also hosted matches against Cosmos and Santos in the past.
In 2011, Kolkata witnessed the arrival of legendary Lionel Messi as Argentina squared off in a friendly match against Venezuela.
Efforts have been made for a long time to bring the Legends of Barcelona to Kolkata. They were supposed to take on the Juventus Legends in Mumbai, last year.
However, the match postponed without any mentioned date. But the aficionados of Kolkata will surely be excited to watch this historic match. The match is being titled ‘Clash of Legends’.
It is organised by the Merlin Group in association with Football Next Foundation and Mohon Bagan.
Histories date back to more than a century:
“The histories of both the clubs dating back to more than a century. FC Barcelona was founded in 1899 and our club was founded in 1889. Hence, we match each other in the legacy. It will be our honour to face a club that is rated amongst the topmost clubs in the world,” Mr Anjan Mitra, Honorary Secretary, or Mohun Bagan Anjan Mitra said at a press conference.
“We might not match them in terms of the heavyweight world cuppers and footballers they have, but we are no less in terms of the rich football history we have. We thank the Sports Department, Government of West Bengal for their support in this venture,” Mitra maintained.
