Mourinho losing his control!! United star refuses to accept reduced role
30-year-old Wayne Rooney hasn’t started any of his side’s last four matches – and despite coming on as a substitute in all of them, Rooney is determined to prove his worth to manager José Mourinho and regain his place in the starting eleven.
Rooney has lost his place in the team as the debate rages on over his best position – initially played as a number ten behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a number of abject performances have seen him moved around by the manager from midfielder to striker but nothing has had the desired effect.
Speaking to the Man United website, Rooney insists that he still has plenty to offer despite being in his 15th season of professional football, saying:
“Obviously I’ve started through all my career, so it is a new period for me and of course I want to play.
“I just have to keep working and trying to get in the team and my chances will come, I know that, and it is up to me to take them.
“I’d like to think I can play every game, but obviously it’s the manger’s decision and I respect the decision. I’ll be ready when needed.
“Not in my mind [do I think I’ve reached the point when I accept only getting 25 games a season]. Maybe in other people’s minds but not mine. I’m 31 next week. I’ve got a lot of football left.”
Rooney came on for the last fifteen minutes against Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night but is unlikely to be given the nod to start in Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge against Chelsea on Sunday.
He could, however, be played from the start in Man United’s Europa League tie against Fenerbahce on Thursday night.
The Red Devils also face a home clash with Manchester City in the League Cup next Wednesday.
Remaining hard to beat and recording positive results at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge, insists Rooney, would provide the platform for United to overcome an inconsistent start under their new manager and emerge as title contenders.
Captain for club and country, Rooney has not started for United since their EFL Cup win over Northampton last month and was dropped for England’s recent World Cup Qualifier in Slovenia.
The former teenage prodigy is already in his 15th season of Premier League and international football despite not yet turning 31.
Rooney has been switched between forward and midfield roles in recent seasons, and the summer arrivals of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba partly explain his shortage of United starts.
