According to the latest reports from England, Chelsea are considering a shock move for 43 year old Tottenham HotSpur goal keeper Brad Friedel. The veteran American goalkeeper is a choice made by club manager Jose Mourinho as a potential replacement to Petr Cech.
Cech who started in Chelsea’s Capital One Cup triumph over Spurs last weekend, is expected to leave Chelsea as he is No.2 in the pecking order below Thibaut Courtois. With a host of clubs showing interest in the services of the Czech Republic international, the transfer in the summer is looking inevitable.
Spurs veteran Friedel, who will turn 44 in May, is the surprise name that is under consideration of both Mourinho and Chelsea’s club management. If the veteran is signed, he would be the third choice goal keeper below Thibaut Coouurtois and Jamal Blackman who is just 21 years old.
Friedel is yet to make an appearance for Spurs this season and hasn’t played for the club since a 2-2 draw against Benfica in the Europa League round of 16 last March. Chelsea had Mark Schwarzer to fulfil a similar role earlier this season, but the 42-year-old left to Leicester on a permanent basis in winter transfer window.
Friedel’s contract at Tottenham will expire at the end of the season and Chelsea are expected to sign the veteran for free. Friedel has made 450 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Tottenham. This experience would be invariable as it comes in handy in very difficult situations where both keepers gets injured.
Friedel also works as an analyst Fox sports despite his Tottenham duties. If the transfer happens, it will be one of the great feelings in his life for Friedel after playing in Premier league for 18 years.
