Must Watch: Fan Footage Shows what Fernandinho Did To Fabregas After Being Slapped
While Chelsea beating Manchester City 3-1 away from home is a big enough talking point, it was the game’s last-minute drama that stole all headlines.
Following a dangerous tackle from Sergio Aguero on David Luiz in stoppage time, all hell broke loose as both sides clashed.
Amongst the brawl was Cesc Fabregas and Fernandinho, who reacted badly to the Spaniard slapping him around the face as he pulled him away from the fracas.
The Brazilian, absolutely furious with Fabregas, grabbed him around the neck and began pushing him towards the edge of the pitch.
Cameras then panned back to the rest of City and Chelsea’s players, but fan footage has now emerged of what Fernandinho did to Fabregas after pushing him.
In the video below at 9:00, Fernandinho, raging from Fabregas’ slap, can be seen pushing the midfielder over one of the ad hoardings surrounding the pitch.
Michy Batshuayi then steps in and pulls the Brazil international away, with coaches also trying to break up the two players.
Fernandinho and Aguero were both eventually sent off for their actions. Following the game, Pep Guardiola – who snubbed a handshake from Fabregas – gave his take on the drama and apologised for his players’ behaviour.
“It is a pity it finished like this,” he said, per the Guardian. “It was the way the referee decided. It is a pity, I would like to apologise.”
Guardiola, though, defended Aguero and Fernandinho’s actions. He added: “[Fernandinho] went to defend his teammate.
“Both players were strong. Both players. He (Luiz) went down and he (Aguero) touched him. It wasn’t intentional.
“I don’t think [it was a red card]. Maybe I have to understand many things here, but the referee says red card, so red card. We accept that. It was a red card. OK, we are going to deal with that.”
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, on the other hand, lauded the referee for sending off Aguero: “This final [stage] wasn’t good. I hope only that Luiz is not injured after this tackle.
“It is very difficult to explain this final part of the game. I support the referee. It is important that the referee whistles and we ‘finish’ [do what he says].”
