Mirror UK reports that Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has stated that the team will not suffer relegation this season. He admitted that team are not in a good position currently, but could salvage themselves from the drop. He also defended his decision not to buy a defender in the January transfer window when fans were impatient with the team’s leaky defence.
The Magpies came under further scrutiny as they were shattered away by a 5-1 thrashing by Chelsea, and fans are blaming Steve McClaren for not buying a defender while spending 29 million pounds this January.
They had conceded 34 goals before the opening of the transfer window and further let 15 goals in. However, McClaren is quite confident that his decision not to buy a defender is serene.
“We will have injured players back, defenders especially. We will be in a better position for the last 12 games.” McClaren spoke. “We will lose games, that is football. And sometimes you lose games against a big team.”
McClaren also pointed out that the team did not feature at Chelsea with needed defenders, indicating the lack of fitness of a few players.
“I do think, though, that coming to Chelsea we did not have the ideal back four you would need in terms of stability.”
“Steven Taylor, it was his second game in seven months. Rolando Aarons was tremendous last week, had to play there and did OK. He is only a young lad and needs more experience.”
The Newcastle boss also expressed that the team have twelve more games, each one of it crucial, and needs to be consistent in performance- which he believe they will- to ensure that Premier League returns to Newcastle United next season.
“We have to make sure, in 18 days time, with 12 games to go, that we are more consistent and make sure away from home we can sort it out and get some points.”
Newcastle are currently 18th in the Premier League table, one point away from safety. They have also conceded 49 times in Premier league, the third worst tally in the league. Out of the next 12 games, Newcastle have an uphill task in front of them if they are to survive in the League.
