It was a sweet ending for the Magpies who managed to settle for a draw against the mighty Manchester United and steal two important points from them. The Toon played decently in the first half but bossed in the latter half of the 90 minute game. As for the Red Devils, they have their own ups and downs throughout the match. Rooney seemed in top form as he scored a brace. Fellaini and Lingard missed two massive sitters and Smalling caused problems for United. The game ended in a 3-3 result with both teams having goal scoring problems heading into the game.
Here’s how we rated the players for their performance.
Newcastle United
Elliot 7- Couldn’t do enough to maintain a clean sheet, saved one important strike of Rooney
Janmaat 6- Poor attacking, not the finest night for the full-back who will have better games
Mbemba 7- Gave away a silly penalty, improved later on
Coloccini 8– Imposing at the back and superb on the ball, helped create Wijnaldum’s goal
Dummett 7- Newcastle’s late hero was so nearly a villain as it was his poor clearance which led to Rooney firing Manchester United into 3-2 lead
Tiote 7- Energetic in the midfield, got booked though
Colback 6– Triedto win penalty out of the Man Utd midfielder reflected desperation at times, tussled Fellaini
Sissoko 7- Unlucky not to equalise early in second half with fine strike beaten away by De Gea
Wijnaldum 7.5- His volley restored hope for the Magpies
Perez 5- Showed neat touches but wasn’t as active as expected
Mitrovic 7- Won a penalty, scored from it and also bossed over Fellaini
Manchester United
De Gea 8- De Gea was faultless for all three goals that flew past him. In fact Man Utd would have conceded more if it wasn’t for his saves
Young 6- Failed to trouble the Newcastle defence with any of his crosses
Smalling 4- Allowed Wijnaldum to score Newcastle’s first goal, conceded the penalty and then deflected Dummett’s strike into own goal
Blind 6- Blind was hardly the imposing centre-half helping to mop up the danger
Darmian 6- Out of position at left-back, made some tackles
Fellaini 5- Made fouls, missed one massive sitter, disgusting game for him
Schneiderlin 6- Hardly contributed, went unnoticed
Lingard 7- Scored one, missed one
Herrera 6- Deserved an assist for a cheeky blind sided back heel which Lingard ended up blazing off target, decent performance
Martial 7- Couldn’t do much while being played on the right
Rooney 9- Scored a brace, second goal was a stunner
