The captain of Real Madrid, Sergio Ramos has rejected the notion that Real Madrid’s decision to deny Barcelona a guard of honor shows a lack of respect to La Liga’s champions in waiting.
Just few days ago, Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said in the press conference before the derby clash that his side will not give guard of honor to their rivals Barcelona.
“We will not do the guard of honor for Barcelona at the Camp Nou. It’s my decision. Barcelona have already broken that tradition when they didn’t give us one during the Super Cup,” Zidane said.
In reply to it, Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique sarcastically remarked that he would lose sleep over the matter after their match against Leganes in Laliga.
However, Ramos on the other side believes the issue has been blown out of proportion and explained rejecting to give guard of honor doesn’t mean they don’t respect Barcelona.
“Not performing a guard of honor doesn’t mean we don’t respect Barcelona. I’ve always said that we’ll do what the coach tells us to. People put too much value on the guard of honour, if the boss has said no then we have to respect him,” Ramos said.
Ramos also talked about their upcoming Champions League match on Wednesday against Juventus and he believes that the tie is not over yet despite leading by 3 goals to nil.
“Everybody thinks we’ve won and that’s what we don’t want to think about. Everybody is saying we are going to win, but we’re going to suffer a lot. We have to do everything to qualify and be focused on what we have to do,” Ramos concluded.
