Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is all over Twitter for simply non-footballing reasons.

Somehow, someone found a photo of topless Oxlade-Chamberlain spooning with other guy and posted it on Twitter and thus began the most pointless and tasteless debate on the social media.

Within hours, Twitter was buzzed with the question: Is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gay?

It’s really astounding that in this day and age, someone’s sexuality could be such a matter of concern to people! And it’s not even that any of these people were close friends or acquaintances of the player.

Most of them have only seen him play and know nothing about him as a person and his personal life. So why does his sexuality bother them so much? The fact is, there are many gay footballers, they are merely not come out– yet.

Clearly, it doesn’t affect him as a player and his performance on the pitch, and as for the Arsenal fans, that’s the only thing that matters to them.

They don’t care if a player is straight, gay or bisexual. They only care that he tries his best when he represents his club and doesn’t put the club’s name in disrepute with his actions.

The issue of homophobia in sports is nothing new, and time and time again, we keep dropping hints that, as a society, we are still not mature enough to handle this issue with it.

This entire episode makes you think that how difficult it must be for a professional player, who is actually homosexual, to come out in front of his teammates and fans. A decision like this could easily ruin his career.

However, you have to appreciate the behaviour of most of the Arsenal fans on this issue. Most of them labelled the news as pointless and refused to take part in the speculation on the social media.
