Steven Gerrard has enjoyed the privilege of playing alongside some pretty special footballers over the course of his career.
Given the recently retired midfielder spent only two years of his playing days outside of the Premier League, there’s no shortage of world-class teammates whom he has shared a pitch with.
At club level, Gerrard has formed a near-telepathic understanding with the likes of Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres, not to mention a dream midfield partnership with Xabi Alonso in years gone by.
Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand are just a handful of the household names he lined up with before calling time on his 14-year England career in July 2014.
However, despite the catalogue of household names the 36-year-old has been lucky enough to play with, there’s one current star he regrets not having the opportunity to team up with.
Gerrard claims he wishes he could’ve played alongside Arsenal star Mesut Ozil at some point, namely because of his sublime playmaking abilities.
“He’s the type of player you would have liked to have played with during your career,” Gerrard said on BT Sport, per the Mirror.
“A lot of assists from him, a lot of magic.”
The former LA Galaxy went on to offer his take on some of the criticism the German international receives due to his occasionally sluggish style of play.
“I think he’s an easy target when it goes wrong for Arsenal because he’s so relaxed and casual,” he added.
“He looks great when they win, but they get beat he’s the easy target.”
A team with Gerrard at his peak and Ozil would’ve been a sight to behold, but unfortunately, fate would prevent football fans from having the opportunity to see the pair in action together.
It would be interesting to see how they would work in the same midfield – and if Gerrard’s opinion would change if he experienced what it’s like to cover for Ozil’s questionable defensive work ethic.
With the ball though, the Reds legend and Gunners star would form arguably one of the most creative forces the game has ever seen.
