Manchester United will need to buy Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos to replace long serving midfielder Michael Carrick this summer, according to Paul Scholes.
The Red Devils have been in sensational form off late and have thrived even more since the deployment of Carrick in defensive midfield as it has helped Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera to play more freely while attacking which has proved positive for the club.
However, the 35-year old is in final year of his contract at the club and looks set to move on at the expiry of his current contract in summer. Scholes, who is considered as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, has suggested that the club should buy another midfielder this summer and Toni Kroos would be an ideal fit.
‘I think we might have to buy somebody,’ Scholes said. ‘A Toni Kroos, or somebody like that, who plays his position really well, knows his position, controls a game of football, doesn’t stray too far from his position.
‘I think Kroos would be ideal. Whether we can get him or not, I don’t know, whether they want him, I don’t know. But Michael will be a big miss.’
Manchester United were previously close to signing Kroos during the reign of David Moyes but the German has decided to stay put with treble winning Bayern Munich after which he moved on to Real Madrid.
Paul Scholes also believes that Carrick can play for at least one year at the club after all the great work he has done for Manchester United in the past few years since his move from Tottenham.
‘I hope he’ll get another year,’ he said. ‘He’s been a sensational player for this club.
‘He doesn’t always get the praise that he deserves really because of the job he does, but the job he does is appreciated so much by the players around him.’
