Under-performing Manchester United star says he feels like a loaded gun 1

Memphis Depay has admitted that he is not loving life at Manchester United after being given a ‘supporting role’ in the first team.

The highly-rated winger was brought to Old Trafford by former United manager Louis van Gaal from PSV Eindhoven for £26million last summer. However, he failed to justify the hype and anticipation surrounding him.He started his career with the Red Devils brightly when he scored a brace to help United defeat Club Brugge by 3-1 in the first leg of Champions League play-off last summer.  But ever since then, he has struggled to perform consistently and has mostly remained on the bench.

His condition has not improved under new manager Jose Mourinho too, who has given him just one start so far – in a 3-1 win against Northampton in the EFL Cup. Apart from that, he has come on as a substitute four times across all competitions.

Speaking to Dutch news outlet Metro Nieuws, he said:“I am the same person and I know what I want. A supporting role is not for me. I’m not a player who is happy with the fact that he is under contract with Manchester United. This is my dream club, but I want to play.”

The winger is currently on national duty Depay for a couple of upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and France, and he is hopeful that he can make the most of the opportunity.

“I feel like a loaded gun, I am ready to play, but wait for my chance. That’s why I’m so happy that I’m at Orange. This is a new opportunity to show myself.”

Meanwhile, a lack of playing time under Mourinho has not affected Depay’s relation with the manager and the winger said that his manager has been encouraging. He also said that the club has made substantial improvement under the Portuguese tactician.
“The training sessions are going well, I’m sharp and fit, but that applies to everyone,” said Depay. “The level has become higher. Jose Mourinho is a top coach.

“Mourinho has expressed his confidence in me. Personally, but also in the press.”
