Player Speaks Out After Leaving Liverpool, Has A Special Message For Jurgen Klopp

It’s safe to say that Christian Benteke’s spell at Liverpool after joining from Aston Villa in July 2015 for a huge £32.5 million fee was very disappointing.

Despite registering a remarkable 49 goals in 101 games for a struggling Villa side and almost single-handedly keeping them in the Premier League at times, he scored just ten times in 42 appearances on Merseyside and was sold to Crystal Palace in the summer.

Brendan Rodgers was the person who brought him to Anfield, but in October last year, with the Reds down in tenth place, the now-Celtic coach was sacked and replaced by Jurgen Klopp just four days after his dismissal.

Upon the German’s arrival, Benteke struggled to establish himself in the team, he was starved of regular first-team action and the big Belgian eventually fell way behind the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and compatriot Divock Origi in the centre-forward pecking order.

Nevertheless, the 26-year-old, who has hit the ground running at Palace with eight goals from 14 league games, is refusing to blame Klopp for his Liverpool exit.

Speaking to French outlet L’Equipe, he insisted that he never had any personal problems with the former Borussia Dortmund boss and revealed that he doesn’t bear any sort of grudge towards his ex-manager.

The Belgium international said, via Goal: “I do not think there was a problem with (Jurgen) Klopp. We always had a good relationship. I went to see him during my first season at Aston Villa, in 2013, when he wanted to sign me for Borussia Dortmund. He liked my style of play.

“But when I signed for Liverpool, it was Brendan Rodgers who wanted me. We met up and had some good talks, so I decided to go to Liverpool. Then, six games later or so, he got fired. One can only accept such things and deal with it.”

Benteke continued: “When Klopp came in, I was not his first-choice because of the other players present. Maybe I was not the best option for him, for his style of play, other players were perhaps a better fit.

“I did not behave like a child. I did not cry about what happened or kicked up a fuss. Even though I clearly wanted to play, it was frustrating.”

While Benteke endured a tough, unsuccessful season at Liverpool, he has been the focal point that Alan Pardew’s Palace have been crying out for in recent

times and his good form has even seen him provide genuine competition to Everton star Romelu Lukaku in their national team.
