Klopp hails Jamie Vardy, praises the valiant performance of Leicester City

Merseyside outfit Liverpool travelled away to the KP Stadium to face off against the Premier League leaders Leicester City, as they looked to cut down their lead at the top of the table. Jurgen Klopp’s side were out to make an impression, after their narrow win in the reverse fixture at Anfield and were hoping for a similar result once again. However, things did not work out for the Merseyside club this time around as Claudio Ranieri’s team were in no mood to slip up. There were no goals scored in the first half, though both sides had some good chances to take the lead. The Reds had a lot of corners in the game, yet nothing really materialized from them. As the two sides went into the break after a goalless first half, the game was still up for grabs.

After the restart, Jamie Vardy scored a couple of goals to kill off the game. The first came exactly at the hour mark, when the England international scored from a superb dipping volley to beat Simon Mignolet from long distance. He later added a second on the 71st minute to make it 2-0 and ensure all three points for his team. Though the visitors tried their best to get something out of the game, as Klopp made a few changes, they failed to have any sort of success in the match and were beaten on the night.

Here is what the German manager had to say in his press conference after the game:

“[Vardy] made the difference tonight. I think our plan was good, it was obviously good.”

“We forced ourselves to play, we knew about their kind of defending; sometimes they had higher pressing and things like this. Then you can, and have to, play over the wings.”

“We had time, we had the ball, we had opportunities in the box, but everybody could see we didn’t make the right decision often enough.”

“The longer the game was, we didn’t get cooler and the decisions didn’t get better. That’s the problem. We had the ball in their box, we didn’t shoot and one second later, Vardy shot from 35 yards and the ball was in. That says most about the game.”

“I don’t feel too good in this moment, because I know we lost and we have to accept it, absolutely no problem. But, I think, with a few things we would have done differently today, we could have won this game.”

“If you can win a game, you should do it. We didn’t. So I need a few minutes to cool down.”

The German further rejected any suggestions that his team lost to Claudio Ranieri’s table-topping outfit due to any shortage of intensity and added, “Maybe the reason is we had six games more in January.”

“The intensity we played with, we had a lot of – we had a lot of good situations. Our problem today was not to run more or to run more intensively, our problem was when we had the ball in the right position we made the wrong decision. That’s all.”

“They [Leicester] had 10 days off and we had three games, so if we could have played at the same intensity, absolutely even, like them then I think they would have done something wrong.”
