Potential Replacement of Petr Cech Signs Long-Term Deal With Arsenal 1

Emiliano Martinez has signed a new long-term contract at Arsenal.

The 24-year-old, who joined the Gunners in 2010, has featured mainly in the League Cup this season but has been earmarked as a promising long-term prospect once current stalwart Petr Cech moves on.

‘Emi’, as he is affectionately known, was understandably delighted to have extended his time in north London.

Being reserve goalkeeper at Arsenal looks an ideal place to learn the trade currently. With the commanding Cech and more flamboyant Ospina ahead of him, Martinez is in a prime position to take the best from both worlds as he seeks to establish himself as Arsene Wenger’s No. 1 at the Emirates.

The Argentine has made ten senior appearances for Arsenal since joining the club, and has been on several loan spells including at Sheffield Wednesday and Wolves.

All is not rosy for Martinez however, given the chance that Wojciech Szczesny could return to the Emirates from Roma next season.

Such a move would only serve to push Martinez down the pecking order and make it more difficult to see him doing anything other than going out on loan again.
