Premier League 2018/19: Marcos Alonso’s Late Winner Help Chelsea Beat Arsenal
A goal fest night at the Stamford Bridge ended in favour of the Blues, as Marcos Alonso’s 81st-minute goal sealed a 3-2 win for Chelsea against their London rivals, Arsenal.
Chelsea won the London derby 3-2.
Maurizio Sarri’s men started the match aggressively and didn’t have to wait long for scoring their first goal. Pedro brought the lead for the home side inside ten minutes, and later, an out of form Alvaro Morata finally found the net to make it 2-0.
After trailing by 2-0 in under 20 minutes, the Gunners were in all sorts of trouble. But they pulled it back even before the second half. However, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan missed a few chances for Arsenal.
Mkhitaryan produced almost a carbon copy of Aubameyang’s miss. But he made amends with a fine left-footed strike to get the away side back into the game. And later, Iwobi thumped high into the net from the Armenia winger’s cross to level the scores before the break.
Chelsea left the field being shell-shocked. The home side looked in disarray. But in the end, it was Sarri’s men who looked the most likely to break the deadlock in a more scrappy second half.
And they did it with 81 minutes played courtesy of Marcos Alonso’s strike. Though, the substitute man Eden Hazard deserves massive credit for the goal.
After some brilliant work from Hazard, the defender made no mistake to take Chelsea upfront with just a few minutes to go.
Arsenal tried to pull one back in the dying minutes. But nothing could save them to taste their second defeat in a row in the end. It was nearly the first point on the board for Arsenal under Emery. However, the team showcased a quality they have been accused of lacking for several years now, which is the character.
While on the other said, Sarri’s men are off to a flyer with two wins in a row.
