Premier League’s extraordinary hitman picks favourite goalscorer in England

Premier League’s extraordinary hitman picks favourite goalscorer in England

Since moving to Manchester City in 2011, Sergio Aguero has been a stalwart in virtually every fantasy football player’s team at the start of the season.

Anyone who scores a 95th-minute winner on the final day of the season to pip the title from Manchester United is guaranteed to go down in Man City folklore but Aguero was never going to rest on his laurels.

The Argentine has gone on to score 147 goals across all competitions for the Sky Blues, with 107 of those coming in the Premier League.

It means he is now just two strikes away from becoming the English top flight’s 20th top scorer of all-time.

The 28-year-old already has five goals from as many appearances so far this season, therefore, overtaking ex-Red Devil Ryan Giggs in the list of highest scorers seems somewhat of a formality.

After Giggs, Aguero will have his sights set on the likes of Emile Heskey, Dion Dublin and Ian Wright but remains quite a distance from Alan Shearer’s record tally of 260.

With the Premier League back in action this weekend, there’s every chance Aguero could knock Giggs of his perch when City face Everton on Saturday.

Aguero has been reflecting on the other Premier League legends he is about to join and has revealed who has been his personal favourite.

The striker reserved special praise for Shearer but actually picked one of his former teammates.

“There are some great names in the Premier League top 20, but without a doubt, for his goal tally and lead over everybody else, Alan Shearer deserves to be on the podium,” Aguero told Man City’s official website.

“That said, there are a number of other players I admire. I’d say it’s a matter of taste or playing style because the Premier League has hosted many of the greats – and still does: Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and Thierry Henry to name just a few.

“But as my personal favourite, I’d like to choose Frank Lampard, who in spite of not being necessarily a striker, stands among the top 10 goal-scorers. That deserves praise.”

Lampard spent one season on loan at the Etihad Stadium working with Aguero in 2014 and made a real impression on the sharpshooter.

He added: “I had the chance to play alongside him and it was a valuable experience. He’s every inch a professional and a man you can respect.”

The ex-England international is currently ranked fourth on the list of all-time scorers with only Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Andy Cole finding the back of the net more often.

However, if Aguero continues at his current rate, it won’t be too long before Lampard slips down into fifth.
