The Round of 16 of the League Cup produced some thrilling contests including a Manchester Derby and a London derby to entertain the fans around the country. There were also a couple of other matches that caught the eye in this round as the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United have all managed to get into the quarter-final of the competition.
Manchester City and Chelsea were knocked out by United and West Ham respectively while Newcastle United, Southampton, Leeds United and Hull city also managed to get into the next round. The draws for the quarter final are already out and there are a couple of games that will entertain the fans. Here are the quarter-final draws of the League Cup this year:
Arsenal vs Southampton:
In an all Premier League contest between two teams that are in decent form early this season, the Gunners welcome Claude Puel’s Southampton side that managed to get past Sunderland with a sole goal from Sofiane Boufal in the Round of 16. Arsenal got past Reading to set up this clash at the Emirates. The two teams have already met at the Emirates this season and the Saints, who fell to a 2-1 loss, will hope for a better result in this game.
Hull City vs Newcastle United:
Mike Phelan’s Hull City are not in the best possible position in the League table, losing each of their previous 5 league encounters home and away. However, they showed some grit in the League Cup this week, putting in a decent performance against Bristol City in the Round of 16 to set up this clash against Newcastle United, who are at the top of the Championship table. They put 6 past a helpless Preston side as Benitez will hope to go all the way in the competition this season.
Manchester United vs West Ham United:
Winners of the respective derbies in the League Cup round of 16, Manchester United and West Ham United have been drawn against each other with United given the chance to hold the tie. A solo goal from Mata was enough for United to set up this clash while Cheikhou Kouyate and Edimilson Fernandes gave West Ham a victory over the Blues knocking them out of the competition. It is a contest between two Premier League teams and is sure to produce an electric game.
Liverpool vs Leeds United:
Arguably the luckiest team in this draw, Liverpool, the finalists of the previous season, have been drawn at home against Leeds United in the round of 16. Leeds needed penalties to get over Norwich City in the previous round and will have to travel to Anfield to meet a Liverpool side who are currently unbeaten in the last 10 games in all competitions. Daniel Sturridge’s brace against the Spurs set up this tie and Klopp will hope that he can go all the way and take that one step further this time around.
All the games will be played on November 29th and 30th.
