Football career:

Born in Jamaica, Raheem Sterling moved to London at the age of five. He began his football career with London-based club, Queens Park Rangers. In 2010, Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez signed him up for the Merseyside club for an initial fee of £600,000. There was a clause in the deal according to which the price could have gone up to £5 million depending on how many appearances he made for the first team.

Sterling rose through the ranks of Liverpool’s academy team and impressed straight away. Just two years after joining Liverpool, he made his senior debut for the club aged 17 years and 107 days. He thus became the third-youngest player to play for the club in the process. Sterling made two more appearances over the remainder of the campaign.

He made his European debut for the club in the following season, coming on as a substitute in a UEFA Europa League qualifying match against Gomel. In the next week, he scored his first goal for the senior team in a friendly against Bayer Leverkusen.

On 23 August 2012, he started his first match for Liverpool in a Europa League qualifying match away to Hearts. Three days later, he made his first start in the league in a 2–2 draw at Anfield to Manchester City.

On 20 October, Sterling scored his first senior competitive goal for Liverpool in a 1–0 league win against Reading. He thus became the second-youngest player ever to score in a competitive fixture for Liverpool, behind only Michael Owen.

In the 2013-14 season, Raheem played an essential role in Liverpool’s second-place finish in the league. As a result, he was named as one of the six players on the shortlist for the PFA Young Player of the Year award. At the end of the season, he was named Liverpool’s Young Player of the Year.

Sterling’s departure from Liverpool, however, was marred with controversy. Liverpool reportedly offered Sterling £100,000-a-week, but the offer got rejected by the player’s representative, Aidy Ward. Sterling was on £35,000-a-week at the time.

Ahead of the 2015-16 season, he secured a move to domestic rivals, Manchester City for an initial £44 million, with a further potential £5 million in add-ons.

However, Sterling failed to live up to expectations. In fact, many even called him the worst signing of the season. But since then, he has flourished under Pep Guardiola and is one of the best players in the Premier League. In the 2017-18 season, he scored seven goals to help City win the Premier League.
