Marco Asensio has left Real Madrid, according to a statement posted on the club’s official website. This Sunday will be his final game at the Santiago Bernabéu. Following his transfer from Mallorca, the 27-year-old will leave Los Blancos at the end of June after an eight-year stay.
In May, Asensio opted to reject Real Madrid’s offer to extend his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu. He is a three-time La Liga and Champions League winner with the Los Blancos. However, in recent years, the Spaniard has fallen down the pecking order against the likes of Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Fede Valverde, forcing him to opt for a new challenge.
Real Madrid send heartwarming farewell message to Asensio
The 27-year-old, who has been strongly linked with a transfer away from Real Madrid in recent weeks, will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the month, according to an official statement from Los Blancos. The encounter against Athletic Club on Sunday will be Marco Asensio’s farewell appearance for the Copa del Rey winners. The club wrote in its official statement:
“Real Madrid would like to express its gratitude and affection to Marco Asensio, a player who has defended our badge and our colours for seven seasons. He joined Real Madrid when he was just 20 years old and has made history as part of a team involved in one of our most successful eras.
“Marco Asensio has lifted 17 trophies at Real Madrid: 3 European Cups, 4 Club World Cups, 3 Uefa Super Cups, 3 La Liga titles, 1 Copa del Rey and 3 Spanish Super Cups. As madridistas we will never forget his career and his outstanding conduct during all this time. Real Madrid is and will always be his home, and we wish him and all his family the best of luck in this new chapter in his career.”
Asensio joined Real Madrid from Mallorca in 2014, and he has since won 17 trophies, including three Champions League wins and three La Liga titles. This season, Asensio has been a crucial component of Carlo Ancelotti’s side, albeit he has not been first choice, with Rodrygo favoured on the right wing.
PSG are the favourites to acquire Asensio, who have reportedly agreed a long-term contract worth a €10 million per year with the free agent. However, no paperwork has yet been signed between the two parties. On the other hand, Aston Villa are also and pushing for a move for the 27-year-old, who hopes to restore his spot in Luis de la Fuente’s Spain team ahead of Euro 2024 next year.
