Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is on the verge of signing a new 4-year deal with the club as per the reports from The Times. The Portuguese manager will have 2 years left on his contract after the current season concludes. Chelsea hierarchy is eager to tie Mourinho to a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge.
Jose Mourinho had previously indicated on signing the longer deal and put all the doubts regarding his longevity to rest. It was speculated that Mourinho might not sign the extension to his current deal at Chelsea as Mourinho has never spent more than 3 seasons at any football club.
Jose Mourinho is currently on a £8.5 million-a-year contract and any rise on the fee would depend on how successful Mourinho can be this season with the blues. Chelsea have not won a major title since their Europa League success in 2013 and Mourinho himself is yet to taste any success since his Copa Del Ray in 2012.
Chelsea, however, are the hot favourites to win this year’s Premier League. Chelsea lead the table with 59 points after 25 matches with second placed Manchester City trailing them by 7 points. Chelsea are progressing nicely in the Champions League as well. Their 1-1 draw against PSG away at Parc des Princes takes them closer to a Quarter Final berth in the tournament. Mourinho’s men are already in the finals of the League Cup, to be played against Tottenham.
Chelsea management has been keen on extending the contract of their key assets. Eden Hazard extended his stay till 2020 recently and now reports of Jose Mourinho signing his new contract are maturing swiftly. One player who would expect a new deal to be handed out will be skipper John Terry.
John terry has been vocal about his desires to stay with his boyhood club. Terry is yet to be approached by Chelsea over the new deal but if Jose is to sign his new long-term contract with the blues, we can expect him to keep Terry at Chelsea for as long as possible.
