Revealed: Arsenal’s Unbelievable £80m Failed Bid For World Class Striker

Arsenal fans were somewhat satisfied when Arsene Wenger captured the signing of Lucas Perez for £17.1 million in the summer transfer window.

The Spaniard arrived from Deportivo La Coruna with a proven goalscoring record in La Liga, suggesting the Gunners’ search for a new and improved striker was over.

It’s been a hit and miss start for Perez, though, who has two goals and two assists in all competitions for Arsenal but was recently ruled out for six weeks with an ankle injury

Luckily for Wenger, Alexis Sanchez has seamlessly made the transition from winger to striker this season, yet it could have been so much better.

According to Italian agent Vincenzo Morabito, Arsenal approached him in the summer transfer window to make a huge £80 million bid for one of football’s deadliest finishers.

And that player? Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Speaking to Radio CRC, Morabito said: “Some time ago, I called Zork, Dortmund’s director of football, to talk about Aubameyang [on behalf of Napoli], but the ‘no’ was absolutely categorical.

“I know that this summer, Arsenal offered €90m (£80m) for Aubameyang, but Borussia didn’t want to hear anything about it.”

Arsenal have enjoyed a brilliant start to the new campaign but, with Aubemayang spearheading their attack, it might have been so much better.

Picture this: Theo Walcott and Sanchez marauding up and down the flanks with Mesut Ozil in the No.10 role and Aubameyang feeding off the German’s through balls.

Nevertheless, Wenger’s men can be content with where they stand in all competitions heading into the latest international break.

Arsenal currently sit fourth in the Premier League, two points behind league-leaders Liverpool; they’re top of Group A in the Champions League, above Paris Saint-Germain; and they’re into the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

Missing out on Aubameyang won’t be of Wenger’s concern right now following a north London derby where defensive mistakes cost his side victory.

“We are disappointed because we didn’t win but overall we are in a strong position,” he said. “It’s what we make of it now and how consistent we will be.

“We have been very consistent until now so, even if we are frustrated now, let’s try to transform that into positive energy when the Premier League restarts.

“I’m disappointed with the way we let, first of all, [Mousa] Dembele run through. That’s not acceptable.”
