World’s richest man and tech giant Bill Gates had the chance to buy Liverpool when he was offered the club back in 2010 as the Microsoft co-founder was considered as one of the potential candidates who could buy the club by then owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.
The details were revealed in the ongoing legal battle between a company called Mill Financial and Gillett and the Royal Bank of Scotland. Gillett and Hicks have taken over at Anfield when they bought the club in 2007 but they were forced to sell the club just three years later as they were failing to make repayments for the money borrowed to buy the iconic club.
The owners then appointed Barclays Capital to find new potential buyers and the recent documents reveal that they have approached Bill Gates back then.
The club was eventually sold to Fenway Sports Group (FSG) in October 2010, however, after Gates was said to have “never responded to the offer,” per Prentice.
Sir Martin Broughton, Liverpool’s chairman at the time, was asked if “there was at least an attempt to contact Bill Gates and Bob Kraft in the US?” to which he replied: “correct”.
Liverpool are one of the biggest football clubs in the world and had the Reds been taken over by Bill Gates then the situation could have been much better at the moment. The club have had a fantastic start to the season but have lost their way completely in 2017 as they completely wasted their positive start to the season.
The Reds were often outbid by their title rivals as they don’t have the financial might like their title rivals Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea. Fans can only hope that there are better days at the club after knowing this heart-breaking news. Had Gates taken over at Anfield, things could have turned out much different as it would have brought the financial muscle to the historic club.
