Former Cardiff City defensive midfielder Gary Medel is on Liverpool’s radar and the Merseyside club have reportedly approached Inter Milan to acquire his services.
Corriere Della Sera claim that Liverpool have contacted the Serie A club in order to bolster their defensive options before the transfer window closes.
During the 2013-14 Premier League season, Medel played for Cardiff City, but when “the Bluebirds” were relegated, Medel left the club for a fee of £10m.
Now with Lucas Leiva almost ready to leave the Reds for a proposed move to the Serie A, and Inter Milan keen on acquiring his services, Medel would be a perfect replacement for the Brazilian.
The midfielder won back to back two Copa America with Chile by defeating Argentina both the time in the final, and was also mentioned in the team of the tournament at the 2015 Copa America
After buying two proven attacking midfielders in the English Premier League – Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum, the Reds boss is now keen on signing a proper defensive midfielder in order to fill the vacant spot of Lucas Leiva, in case the Brazilian leaves.
In yesterday’s 4-3 win against Arsenal, Liverpool’s vulnerability to counter attacks could be spotted easily and no one was there in the midfield to stop those counters. Jurgen Klopp has always plotted a strong defensive midfielder in his line-up who would not hesitate to tackle! A proper example would be Sven Bender of Borussia Dortmund. With Medel’s physical gameplay and a decent pace to chase down the counter attacks, seems like he could a perfect “Klopp type” defensive midfielder, who will play the “keep the door shut” kind of role in the midfield.
Liverpool will play Burnley in the Premier League next, and with no European football this season, Klopp and Co will focus on the Premier League only!
