Considering he’s an Arsenal legend, and he did such a good job of praising Petr Cech when he joined the club last year, you’d think David Seaman would throw his support behind the veteran shot-stopper.
Having played for the club between 1990 and 2003, he will have no doubt been more critical than most of his long line of successors.
And it would seem that he is not one to mince his words when asked for an opinion.
Speaking at the 2016 Pride of Sport Awards on Wednesday night, he was asked who he thought was the best goalkeeper plying his trade in English football at the moment.
And he gave a surprising, if understandable answer.
The 53-year-old revealed that while there are a number of top custodians that spring to mind, there is only one stand out candidate for the prize.
And that man is Manchester United’s David de Gea.
“I think you’ve got to look at someone like David de Gea, you know after the start he had when he first came,” he said via the Daily Mirror.
“He’s really settled down and shown how good he is.”
However, despite overlooking him for the top spot, the former England star did reserve some praise for the 34-year-old.
“But then you look at Petr Cech, you know the experience and what he has won in the game is fantastic.”
The report also states that Seaman feels that Joe Hart – who was absent from his initial comments – should also be playing in England.
The Manchester City star is currently spending the season on loan with Italian side Torino after being told by Pep Guardiola that he wasn’t in his plans.
Hart has still retained his place in the England side, though, and is expected to move on over the summer once his loan spell has concluded.
