FC Barcelona and Spanish winger Pedro Rodriguez is on his way to London to sign for defening Premier League champions Chelsea. Pedro was initially linked with other Premier League sides like Manchester City and mainly Manchester United but Chelsea entered the race at the last moment and won it comfortably. The Blues have agreed to pay £22million and add ons to FC Barcelona for the 28-year-old attacker.
According to Mirror, there are reasons why Pedro chose Chelsea over Manchester United. Firstly Pedro from the beginning was skeptical about playing under United manager Louis van Gaal. He was advised by former Barcelona star Hristo Stoichkov not to join the Red Devils as Louis van Gaal might end his career. Stoichkov who had played under Van Gaal during the later’s stint at Camp Nou and had foul-mouthed the manager last week.
Pedro was also worried with how his former Barcelona team mate and Spanish international goalkeeper Victor Valdes was treated by the Dutchman. Valdes had a row with his own manager earlier this season for lack of game time. Pedro who is a very good friend of Valdes has apparently been advised not to sign for Manchester United.
A week back, it was reported in the media that United Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward was in Spain to finalise the deal with Pedro. But apparently the club pulled off all the plug after getting a signal from manager Louis van Gaal. In reality, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia was also negotiating with Barcelona and they have done a great job in reaching a final agreement ahead of league rivals.
Another huge reason which might have convinced Pedro was a the constant interest of manager Jose Mourinho and his Spanish team mate Cesc Fabregas. Fabregas had joined Chelsea last summer from Barcelona. Fabregas had apparently took the centre stage to convince the 28-year-old winger.
Cesc’s girlfriend, Daniella Semann, was working on convincing Pedro’s wife, Carolina Martin. Fabregas thus played a huge role in this high-profile signing of Chelsea.
Pedro’s denial came as a huge blow for Manchester United. This failure to sign yet another wolrld class player will not be taken in good terms by United management and they might go all out for their rest of the targets. Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller is being tracked down by the Red Devils and the club is desperate to bolster the squad and increase the depth.
