Revealed: Why Jose Mourinho subbed Terry at half-time?
Jose Mourinho took a bold decision yesterday against Manchester City as he benched captain John Terry at half-time and introduced young defender Kurt Zouma.
John Terry had a very poor outing against the Citizens last night as he was at fault for the first goal the Blues conceded. Terry remained out of position as Sergio Aguero went past four Chelsea players to net the opening goal of the match. Also, the Chelsea veteran lacked pace against a speedy Manchester City attack.
After the match, Sky Sports had asked Jose Mourinho the reason behind his decision to replace Terry to which the Portuguese replied: “John Terry [had no injury]. It was just a decision. I know that Kurt Zouma is the fastest defender Chelsea have.
“He is a player of my total trust. With me, he was never substituted but, with other managers, he was not even playing. Some people thought his career was over. If anyone has the free mind to make this decision, I am the one because I’m the one who gave him the chance to be what he is: a fantastic player and captain.
“I left him out because, tactically, I had to make a change. Sometimes you are right and sometimes you are wrong but I think I was right. We controlled the counterattack completely afterwards. My decision was proven right.
“John is Chelsea captain, for sure, and a player with my entire confidence, for sure.”
John Terry’s performance looked unconvincing from the very first match of the season when Chelsea had conceded twice against Swansea City. The 34-year-old is well past his prime and he is in on the verge of hanging his boots for good. This season might prove to be the penultimate year of Terry’s Chelsea career as the player has lost his flair in the backline.
Terry is not even half the player of what he was a season back. Jose Mourinho might consider giving Kurt Zouma more starts alongside Gary Cahill in the coming fixtures.
While many criticised the manager for taking such a harsh decision in a crucial game, the manager rightly fielded Zouma. He also explained his decision and it was pretty much convincing.
