Football career:
Silva’s career took a turn for the good when he impressed Fluminense coach Maurinho during a friendly in Xerém. However, it was not the precursor of the things that were to follow. At the age of 15, Silva gave trails for Madureira, Olaria and Flamengo but was rejected at each club.
After another unsuccessful trial at Botafogo, Silva was taken on by Barcelona, a small Brazilian club in the lower divisions. The following year, Silva played at a showcase tournament in São Paulo in the hope of attracting attention of bigger clubs. It is there where he was spotted by Paulo César Carpegiani, who invited him to join RS Futebol Clube in the south of Brazil. By 2001, Silva was a professional and competed in the Brazilian Third Division and other regional tournaments with the first team. In a tournament played in Ancona, Italy, Silva was spotted by Bruno Conti, a coach with Roma. Conti wanted him to play for Roma, but Silva did not accept the offer.

Silva soon moved to Juventude after some impressive performances as a defensive midfielder. For his performances at Juventude, he was rated by the sports magazine Placar as the third-best defender in Brazil. Silva’s performances started attracting attention and he soon sealed a move to Porto for €2.5 million in 2004.
However, he played only for the reserve team. After a year in Portugal, he joined Dynamo Moscow. But things did not go down well in Russia too. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was hospitalised for six months. His illness became much worse over time and his doctors told him that if he had been hospitalized two weeks later, he could have died. During his recovery, Silva decided to retire from football but was persuaded to reconsider by his mother.
His career was finally revived when he relocated to Brazil with Fluminense. His first season with the club was not a good one as the team finished 15th out of 20 teams. However, Silva made a name for himself with his performances. He continued to impress and once again moved to Europe, this time with AC Milan in 2009 and there was no looking back since then.
Silva established himself as one of the highest rated defenders in the world, winning the Serie A title in the 2010–11 season.

In July 2012, Paris Saint-Germain signed him for a reported €42 million. It made him the then second-most expensive defender in history behind Rio Ferdinand. With PSG, Silva has won four consecutive Ligue 1 championships, five consecutive Coupes de la Ligue and three consecutive Coupe de France.
For Brazil, Silva is a full international since 2008. He was a part of the squad that played the 2010 FIFA World Cup but did not play a single game. Three years later, he led Brazil to victory at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. In the following year, he captained Brazil to fourth place at the World Cup. He was also part of their squads for the two Olympic tournaments. Silva won a bronze in 2008 and silver four years later. He featured in two Copa América editions too.
