Revealed: Top Three Attacking Teams In Premier League History

Everyone loves an attacking team. They provide the most goals, the most assists and the most drama in football and give rise to some of the best attacking talents in world football, with Sergio Aguero arguably topping those ranks at the moment for Manchester City.

Let us look back at the three best attacking sides in the history of the Premier League.

3. Liverpool 2013-14 – 101 goals

The season that almost was for Liverpool. But for the infamous Steven Gerrard slip, Liverpool would probably have gone on to clinch their first ever Premier League title and first top flight league title since the old First Division. This was due in no small part to their sensational attacking talents, spearheaded by the unstoppable Luis Suarez.

The Reds bagged 101 goals in a sensational season which unfortunately led to the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona. His dribbling ability and all round knack of being able to lead the line and do anything helped fire them to their closest title race yet. Coupled with a fresh-faced Raheem Sterling and a fit and confident Daniel Sturridge, saw them regularly put teams to the sword.

None more so than Tottenham with an aggregate 9-0 win against them over the two game. Perhaps Liverpool’s most impressive win was the 5-0 destruction of Spurs at White Hart Lane which still remains one of the most complete performances by any Premier League team in history. Even Jon Flanagan managed to get on the scoresheet.

2. Manchester City 2013-14 – 102 goals

The team that just pipped Liverpool to the title, and on goals scored. Manuel Pellegrini’s first season in charge of City saw them blow teams away for fun, with goals being shared around the pitch constantly.

Pellegrini finally got the best out of Yaya Toure who had been an inconsistent performer in his first two seasons in England. The Chilean boss turned his form around and the Ivorian midfielder found the net 20 times in the Premier League, a record only matched by Frank Lampard for goalscoring midfielders. Sergio Aguero also scored 17 in a relatively injury hit season while Edin Dzeko scored 16 to cement his place as one of the best impact players in the league.

Again, Tottenham were on the receiving end of some batterings in this season, with City scoring no fewer than 11 goals against them. The 6-0 demolition at the Etihad was a particular highlight with winger Jesus Navas showing a rare glimpse of why City paid Sevilla £15 million for his services, with two goals, in the first and last minute of the game.

  1. Chelsea 2009-10 – 103 goals

Statistically, the best attacking side in the history of the Premier League, this was another fantastic achievement for the club, and like Pellegrini, with a rookie Premier League manager. Carlo Ancelotti brought the historically “un-Italian” attacking flair to the club rather than pragmatic defensiveness.

Didier Drogba started the season at 31-years-old yet he got better and better throughout the campaign and scored 29 goals in the Premier League as Chelsea just nudged ahead of Manchester United to win the league by a single point. Frank Lampard was also in imperious form grabbing 22 goals and cementing his status as the best goalscoring midfielder in Premier League history.

Chelsea also scored an unprecedented seven or more goals on four separate occasions in the season putting Sunderland, Aston Villa, Stoke and Wigan to the sword, the latter on the day The Blues clinched the title. Couple with two 5-0 wins throughout the season saw the Chelsea side of 2099-10 be the bets attacking team in Premier League history.
