Roberto Firmino
Roberto Firmino is wanted by Real Madrid after leaving Liverpool.

Former Liverpool attacker Roberto Firmino is a free agent target for Real Madrid this summer. Firmino has opted not to extend his contract with the Reds and has left Anfield at the end of the season. The 31-year-old was in negotiations with the club about a new contract but changed his decision and will instead seek a new challenge, with many teams interested in his signature as a free agent.

Roberto Firmino scored in Liverpool’s final game of the season, a thrilling 4-4 draw with relegated Southampton on Sunday. The striker has been one of Jurgen Klopp’s better performers this season, despite his game time being reduced with the arrivals of Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo. But Real Madrid admire the Brazilian’s brilliant qualities and believe he can still contribute despite turning 31.

Real Madrid eye Roberto Firmino as Karim Benzema backup

Since joining Liverpool from Hoffenheim in 2015, Roberto Firmino has scored 109 goals in 360 games, establishing a deadly front three with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo’s recent arrivals, however, have ushered in a moment of transformation at Anfield.

Firmino’s representative, Roger Wittmann, revealed that despite indicating to the Reds many months ago his desire to depart this summer, he had not spoken to other clubs or planned his future beyond the season. This devotion to the Reds insured that he would remain with the club until the end of the season.

According to Diario AS, Firmino is a possibility for Real Madrid this summer if they do not invest a lot of money on a new striker. At the moment, Karim Benzema is Real Madrid’s lone natural striker, and considering his injury history, this is a position that will require reinforcements. The record European champions have been hunting for a backup for Benzema, who is set to stay at the club next season amid persistent talk of a move to Saudi Arabia.

Joselu of Espanyol has surfaced as a possible replacement, as has Roberto Firmino, who will leave Liverpool at the end of the month when his contract ends. Real Madrid are planning to give Firmino a three-year contract for €5 million per season, according to Defensa Central. Real would be making a wise decision if they signed Firmino as although he has not played much in recent seasons, the Brazilian has shown to be a great player.

In recent years, Los Blancos have adopted a philosophy of signing high-profile free agents such as David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger. This makes them particularly appealing since they may offer greater earnings as they are not obligated to pay a transfer fee. There have been no talks between the Spanish giants and Firmino, who would suit into Madrid’s style by dropping deep and linking up with the midfield and wide strikers.
