It’s a given that, when either the club or player stall on a new contract, transfer rumours start doing the rounds. The latest case is the one of Barcelona and Spain holding midfield player, Sergio Busquets. Goal ran a story backed by Sport , stating that the player was uneasy, given the club’s reluctance to offer him an improved deal.
Busquets has been with the first team since 2008 and his current contract expires in 2019. At 27, one would imagine that he would want to continue in arguably the best team in the world for a few more years. Busquets may not be the most popular player with fans across the globe due to some of his antics on the field but he has over the years established himself as a vital cog in the Barcelona engine, first, under Pep Guardiola and now, Luis Enrique. He is required to do the ‘dirty work’ in the team and is often regarded by his teammates as an unsung hero for his silent contributions. Thus, it makes it improbable that Barcelona would let go of a talent like Busquets, but funnier things have happened in the transfer market before! Amongst his prospective suitors, PSG has been mentioned and so has a possible reunion with former manager Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The latter seems to be the more plausible of the two rumours since there have been murmurs that this could well be Yaya Toure’s last season at the club. Certainly, Busquets would bring to the table that requisite experience in midfield. Manchester United has also been mentioned, but if there is any truth to the ‘Mourinho to United’ rumours, then it wouldn’t be wrong to write this one off completely.
In most cases though, these rumours are fuelled to get the player a better contract and I won’t be surprised to see Busquets putting pen to paper very soon.
