Sanchez vs Giroud Stats: Here is why Wenger has overlooked the French attacker?!

By most accounts, Alexis Sanchez has excelled having been moved into a centre-forward role for Arsenal this season. Now we have some stats to prove it.

The mini-Chilean’s performances have been compared to those of Olivier Giroud, Arsenal’s only out-and-out centre-forward option.

It seems that despite Giroud being the specialist in the position, Sanchez is outdoing his French team-mate.

Now Whoscored.com has looked into the stats of the two players whenever they had started a Premier League game in the centre-forward position. They show that Sanchez scores more often converts more chances and plays twice as many key passes.

Giroud betters Sanchez on his regularity of tackling and how often he shoots.

With Sanchez’s four goals this season propelling the Gunners up to third in the table the idea of Arsene Wenger making a change always seemed remote. A look at these stats makes the notion absurd.

Despite the general belief being that Giroud isn’t getting into the team because of injury, Oli’s closest friend at the club, Laurent Koscielny, reckons that his absence is all down to the form of Alexis Sanchez. Koscielny said: “It’s difficult for Olivier Giroud at the moment because Alexis Sanchez is currently ‘walking on water’ at Arsenal.”

Now admittedly Alexis has certainly grown into his role in leading the Arsenal attacks. However his performances as a striker this season might not keep Oli out of the squad completely!

Some of the fans raising questions, why wouldn’t Giroud at least be on the bench, when he clearly has the quality to be there. Perhaps, Arsene Wenger is still not entirely convinced on the Frenchman’s fitness, which is becoming a real concern at the club.

In fact, everybody was surprised that Koscielny didn’t mention anything about his teammate’s fitness at all during his interview.

Giroud really needs to step up his game for the Gunners if he wants to keep his place as a regularly playing striker in the Arsenal first team squad.

At 30 years old now, Giroud no longer has age on his side and he’ll soon find his Arsenal career winding down if he isn’t careful enough about getting back into the match day squads.
