Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has heaped praise on the club’s signing of fellow Argentine Julian Alvarez. The English champions scouted him from River Plate and immediately forked out an initial fee of £14 million for the striker. Alvarez signed for City in January earlier this year, but remained with the Argentine side on loan for the next six months.
The 22-year-old had scored a massive 53 goals and further assisted 31 in just 119 appearances for River Plate. That was enough to catch the attention of City, who were constantly enquired by many of Europe’s top clubs for the striker’s loan. However, manager Pep Guardiola asserted that Alvarez will be a part of his first-team plans next season and won’t be sent out on loan.
Sergio Aguero claims Alvarez is ‘one of the best’ with competitive mentality
Sergio Aguero, the all-time top scorer of City left the club last summer after a trophy-laden decade to join FC Barcelona. However, his stay at the Catalan club was cut-short after he had to take a pre-mature retirement from the game last December due to heart problems.
The striker has since been keeping tabs on his former club Man City and has now assessed their summer business. Aguero believes City have been smart in the acquisition of Alvarez, further backing the youngster to emulate immense success at the Etihad.
Speaking to Stake.com, Sergio Aguero said: “Julian [Alvarez] has all the conditions to succeed at City. He has already shown it in the two games he played in which he even scored a goal and against Liverpool no less. He is a quiet boy who seems shy but when it comes to training and going out to compete, he is one of the best.
“He works very hard, he gives everything and doesn’t stop running. He is a locomotive and very eager to grow. The advice is to be himself. Let him listen and try to absorb all the teachings. With that and his ability, he will be able to compete at the best level.”
Julian Alvarez did have a mixed start to his professional career at City, scoring on his debut against their fierce rivals Liverpool in the Community Shield. However, the Reds toppled City 3-1 to lift the Shield. Nonetheless, Alvarez has given a glimpse of his ability and would be gearing up to start the new season with the Cityzens.
Aguero also had an amusing review for another striker which arrived at the club, Erling Haaland. The Norwegian missed a flurry of chances against Liverpool and was easily shut by their defense. Talking about the same Aguero said, “He was too used to Germany, Haaland thought he was alone, then Van Dijk arrived and said ‘welcome to the Premier League’.”
The Argentine meanwhile further questioned City’s handling of winger Raheem Sterling. The England international was sold by City to fellow rivals Chelsea, which has left Aguero baffled. “I don’t understand the sale of Sterling, there are times they [City] make strange decisions.”
Sterling racked up 131 goals and 94 assists in 339 games for City, and will now be hoping to carry on the same form at Stamford Bridge.
