Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Arsenal: Player Ratings – Rude Wenger faced a SHOCK defeat
Arsene Wenger’s side were dealt a huge blow in the 4th round of League Cup on Tuesday as they were knocked out by Sheffield Wednesday. The manager fielded a relatively low profile side for the game and that hurt the Gunners as they slipped to a 3-0 defeat on the day. Arsenal were lacking any kind of spark on the day and Sheffield were deserving of a place in the next round.
Here are the player ratings for this game
J Wildsmith (3): Was rarely tested after a Mertesacker header in the first half. Was solid when called upon.
J Hunt (3): Never gave Arsenal any space down his flank as he kept it tight in defense to get a clean sheet.
G Loovens (3): Was the pillar of the Sheffield defense as he repeatedly made blocks and interceptions as he led his backline ruthlessly.
S Hutchinson (3.5): Was exceptional in defense giving Arsenal no time on the ball. Also got himself a goal just after the break to make it 3-0.
D Pudil (3.5): Great work down the flank as he tirelessly patrolled up and down his side to trouble Arsenal all day long.
T Lees (3): A confident display was almost capped off with a sumptuous volley that gave Hutchinson his goal.
B Bannan (3): His smart passing was always a problem for Arsenal and also gave a great account of himself defensively.
K Lee (2.5): Did not make too much of a contribution at both ends of the field but was full of energy all game.
J Helan (3): Was full of direct running that troubled the Arsenal back four.
R Wallace (4): Was instrumental in almost every Sheffield attack. Scored the first goal and set up the second in a complete man of the match performance.
Lucas Joao (3): His physical presence and aerial ability was a nuisance in the Arsenal half. Also got himself a goal with a well-timed header.
A Nuhiu (2.5)
Petr Cech (2.5): Couldn’t do much against any of the goals scored but was not as commanding as he would have liked.
C Chambers (2): Hardly provided anything going forward and was always second to Joao’s pace and physicality.
P Mertesacker (2): Was too easily and too often beaten in the air by the Sheffield forwards. Should be more determined in his box.
K Gibbs (1.5): Was woeful in defense as he let the hosts dominate the penalty area time and again.
M Debuchy (1.5): An underwhelming performance from the wing back as he failed to stop the two goals in the first half that were set up down his flank.
G Kamara (1.5): The newbie did not do enough on either side of the pitch and needs a lot of work on his game before playing again.
Oxlade-Chamberlain (-): Was injured under five minutes and was replaced by Theo Walcott.
M Flamini (2): Showed glimpses of his class but was absent for most of the game in the mid-field.
O Giroud (2): Hardly got a chance to effect the game when Arsenal were in possession but was found static more often than not.
A Iwobi (2): Started off brightly to try and impress his fans but needed to see a lot more of the ball and be intelligent in possession.
J Campbell (2.5): The brightest Arsenal player on the day but was too often lacking the final pass required to break the home side’s defenses.
Theo Walcott (2.5): Came in for Chamberlain but forced off as he himself picked a knock just 15 minutes later.
K Bielik (2.5)
I Bennacer (2)
