It is well known that former Paris St-Germain defender David Luiz was not Chelsea’s first-choice option to bolster their leaky defence. The Blues chased several center-backs, most notably Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli, but failed to struck a deal. With transfer deadline coming close, the English giants made a sensational bid for their former defender Luiz. After resisting the bid, the French champions finally gave up as the Blues completed the capture of the Brazilian on deadline day for £30 million, just two years after he left Stamford Bridge for the French capital in a record £50 million deal. The Brazil international signed a three-year deal with the English outfit.
With the deal now done and dusted, French news outlet L’Equipe has made a shocking revelation. The daily has claimed that Luiz was not even the first choice defender from PSG for Chelsea and the Blues wanted to sign Luiz’s PSG team-mate Kimpembe instead.
Chelsea manager was desperate to bolster his defence ever since taking charge of the club and according to the report he had been tracking the 21-year-old for some time. But he finally preferred the Brazilian defender due to his experience.
The 29-year first joined the West London club from Benfica for £21 million in 2011 and stayed at English capital for three years. He made made 143 appearances for the Blues in all competitions, scoring 12 goals.
