With just 14 points from the first 9 games, Jose Mourinho’s stint at Old Trafford is not off to the greatest start. They are currently in the 7th place in the points table, 6 points away from league leaders Manchester City and are in desperate need of some consistent results.
Having spent more than £150m, Jose Mourinho was expected to bring instant success to Old Trafford and the Community Shield was supposed to be just a trailer. However, the recent run of games has seen the Red Devils struggle to beat teams and this has already seen a portion of the fans asking for the axe on Mourinho.
The tactics that the manager used in the game at Anfield may have got his team a point, but many Manchester United supported were not happy with the way the team has played and it has now given rise to rumors that Mourinho might actually be sacked for the second consecutive year.
Reports today have gone on to suggest that World Cup winner and former PSG manager Laurent Blanc might be the man to replace Mourinho at Old Trafford.
The 50-year old was a part of the Manchester United squad back in 2003 and is reportedly waiting for an approach from the Red Devils over the managerial job in place of Jose Mourinho.
Reports suggest that Blanc is being offered the Inter Milan job with Frank de Boer reportedly close to a sack but the Frenchman is adamant that he wants to land the Manchester United job and is ready to wait for Mourinho’s tenure to see if he is successful.
The League Cup victory against Manchester City will relieve some pressure on the under-fire boss at Old Trafford but Mourinho will know that he needs to keep grinding results out to keep his side in the hunt in the Premier League.
A bizarre stat shows that the Portuguese manager has the same number of points as David Moyes did back in 2013/14 where United finished outside of a European spot.
Mourinho has accumulated a top class squad but has just not been able to get the star players to play together and provide the goods consistently. The likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba, two players who have played most games for the club this season, have blown hot and cold so far this campaign and the manager will hope that they can find some consistency to lift the club to the top of the table.
As it stands, United will find it hard to even burst into the top-4 and Laurent Blanc will be hoping that he can land the job at the end of the season to give himself a fresh start.
