Shocking: Manchester United approached Premier League rivals' manager to replace Sir Alex Ferguson 1

Manchester United was undoubtedly the most dominant team in the Premier League in last decade. The Red Devils won 6 league titles, 1 Champions League, 1 FA Cup, 3 League Cups between 2002 and 2012. They won all the silverwares under one manager – Sir Alex Manager. However, things would have been so different at Old Trafford if Alex Ferguson had decided to go ahead with his plans of retiring from the game in 2002.

According to reports in the Daily Mail, the Red Devils had approached Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to replace the Scott. Wenger was one of the most impressive managers in the league at that time. After taking charge of Arsenal in 1996, he had led Arsenal to two Premier League titles and was United’s first choice to replace Ferguson had he retired.

However, the French tactician, who is celebrating 20 years of service with the Gunners this weekend, rejected the offer before Ferguson changed his mind and decided to continue with the Red Devils.

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood recently admitted that he was not aware of United’s approach, saying: “I don’t think Arsene has ever been tempted.”

One of the longest-serving managers in the Premier League, Wenger has consistently rejected offers to remain loyal to the North London club. The 66-year old recently revealed that he was rejective lucrative offers from French champions Paris Saint-Germain on three occasions.

Wenger, whose current contract at the Emirates expires in 2018, has been recently linked with taking on England’s manager’s role. However, he has said that he is currently concentrating on his job with the club.

He said: “My priority is to do well here (Arsenal).

“This has always been my club. If I am free one day, why not? But I am concentrated on my job.

“Of course I am flattered that my name is linked with the job. But my priority has always been this club.

“Until the end of the season, I am here. And I am completely focused on that. What happens then is not decided – but I do know the words of God Save the Queen.”
