Sir Alex Ferguson excited about this Arsenal star (not Sanchez or Ozil)!!
Sir Alex Ferguson was not in the habit of praising his opponents during his 26 years sat in the dugout at Old Trafford – particularly when it came to Arsenal.
However, now he has been out of the game for a few seasons the Manchester United icon can evaluate the Premier League’s other big sides from a much more neutral perspective.
Ferguson’s old club have certainly made that easier for him by struggling to cope with his absence at the helm.
In the three years since the Scot stepped down as manager, the club has finished outside the top four twice and are now on their third different manager.
Jose Mourinho has endured many of the same troubles his two predecessors did in the early part of the season but Ferguson remains confident the Red Devils are still in with a chance of winning the title.
“I think there’re five potential candidates: Manchester City as favorites, Tottenham and Liverpool, but also Man United are still there if we get some consistency soon. Even when you are trailing by six, eight points, it’s still possible to catch one or two teams,” Ferguson told Kicker, as per ESPN.
“The rivalry and the experience of Guardiola and Mourinho makes for an exciting competition.”
In regards to Arsenal, Ferguson praised the work of his old foe turned friend Arsene Wenger and picked out one youngster who has started the season brightly.
He added: “And you shouldn’t forget Arsenal. The team is more sturdy. They’ve got better and more aggressive. I’m impressed with the young boy Alex Iwobi.”
Even some Gunners supporters might not have been familiar with Iwobi before the campaign got going.
The young Nigerian featured sporadically last term but the 2016/17 season looks set to be his breakthrough year at the Emirates.
He has already picked up three assists in 11 appearances and has seemingly convinced Wenger to trust him in the Frenchman’s first choice starting XI.
And although Ferguson used to be a sworn enemy in the eyes of anyone connected to the Arsenal, Iwobi should feel proud his performances are being recognized by one of the most successful managers in history.
But when Arsenal travel to Old Trafford on November 19 Ferguson will certainly be hoping his praise of Iwobi doesn’t come back to haunt him.
