Liverpool squandered a good chance of extending their lead to four points at the top when they failed to break a resilient Southampton defence and could only manage a goalless stalemate.
After scoring 12 goals in their last three games, expectations were high from Jurgen Klopp’s men against the home team, which had lost its previous two games. In an otherwise uneventful first half, Sadio Mane came close to scoring against his former employers in the 28th minute but was denied by a brilliant save from Fraser Forster. The story remained same in the second half too as the visitors failed to convert a string of chances. Roberto Firmino and Nathaniel Clyne came close to open the scoring early in the second half as the league leaders upped their efforts. The visitors got few more chances but the Saints held on to earn a valuable point.
The Merseyside outfit is still leading the table by goal difference but third-ranked Chelsea can topple them with a win over Middlesbrough on Sunday.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the match:
Why did Sturridge not get more time?! It was predictable that players would be tired so give the guy with a point to prove a chance #souliv

Bit deflated by that but Southampton wanted a draw a somehow got one. Good to see these teams are scared of us home and away #lfc #souliv

Not the best game and neither the best result but consistency and a clean sheet on a difficult stadium. Southampton 0 vs @LFC 0

I can't get over how good Virgil van Dijk has been this season for Southampton. Easily the best centre-back in the Premier League right now.

Frustrating for Liverpool today but Saints have to be given credit. 2 goal saving tackles meant they deserved their point #SOULIV
