Southampton vs Liverpool: Preview, Predictions, Expected Lineups and Betting Odds

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are back in action this weekend after two longs weeks at the top of the Premier League table. They are fresh from a thumping victory over Watford in the last round and will be hoping to go all the way with some consistent performances this season. They face a tough task this weekend when they travel to the St Marys to face a Southampton side that is picking up some form recently. The St Marys has not been an easy place to take a result from for Liverpool but they will have to work hard and take all three points if they are to consolidate their place at the top of the points table. Here is the preview of this game, along with the team news, predicted lineups and betting odds.

The League game between Southampton and Liverpool will be played on Saturday, the 19th of November at the St Marys in Southampton. The kick off is scheduled at 4:00 pm BST (8:30 pm IST)

Team News:

Though the Saints had a huge injury list before the international break, they are expecting to welcome back a few for this game. Fraser Forster, midfielder duo Dusan Tadic and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg along with fullbacks Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares are expected to be fit enough to take part in Saturday’s clash. However, Shane Long and Matt Target remain sidelined.

Klopp will be frustrated with the couple of injuries to key players after the international break. Adam Lallana is out for this game but will be back in action next week while Philippe Coutinho is also expected to play no role in this game. Sakho, Gomez and Ojo will play no role in this game.

Expected lineups:

Southampton:

Forster; Soares, Fonte, Van Djik, Bertrand; Romeu, Davis, Classie, Tadic, Redmond; Austin

Liverpool:

Key Battles:

Sadio Mane vs Van Djik:

mane

The former Southampton winger will face his former team for the first time since his move to Liverpool and will hope to use his expertise to help his side to a victory in this game but he will up against a solid Van Djik, who has been impossible to beat. This is a battle between two former team-mates that can decide the outcome of the game.

Nathan Redmond vs Nathaniel Clyne:

Redmond has been decent this season in front of goal and will be a threat for the Reds this weekend. He will provide width to his side in attack and will be up against Nathaniel Clyne from Liverpool. Clyne another former Saint, will have to be at his best to keep him away from danger.

Key Stats:

Liverpool have conceded 14 goals, more than seven, but their 30 goals are four more than any other team has scored this season.

Away from home, Liverpool have conceded 10 goals

Only Crystal Palace, Watford, West Ham United, Hull City, and Leicester have conceded more goals away from home this season.

After a run of six straight clean sheets in all competitions earlier in the season, Southampton have only been able to keep one clean sheet in their last seven matches.

Couple those inconsistent performances at the back with Liverpool’s lethal attack and we could be in for some goals. Prior to that win, Southampton had gone four Premier League games without beating Liverpool (D1 L3).

The table-topping Reds are enjoying their best start to a Premier League season since 2008/09 when they also had 26 points after 11 games played. Only in 2002/03 (27) have they collected more points at this stage of the competition.

A lot of Liverpool’s success is down to the attack with 40 goals plundered in 14 competitive games so far this season (all competitions) – that’s their best tally after 14 games since 1895/96 (48 goals).

Southampton have dropped more points from leading positions than any other top-flight team this season (8). By contrast, no side has collected more from behind than Liverpool (6).

Philippe Coutinho is a man in form with five assists and five goals already to his name in the Premier League this season. The Brazilian has scored on three of his previous four visits to St Mary’s.

No English Premier League player has scored more goals across all competitions this season than Southampton’s Charlie Austin (8, level with Theo Walcott).

Betting Odds:

Southampton: 13/5

Draw: 13/5

Liverpool: 1

Prediction:

Though Liverpool are on a role this season, they have found a trip to the St Marys a bit troublesome recently. Claude Puel’s side have been impressive this season and will provide the Reds with some tough competition this weekend. However, with the form they are in, Liverpool will be expected to take all three points.

Our Prediction:

Southampton 2-4 Liverpool
