Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United were handed their first defeat of the new season in their home turf this weekend.
Cross town rivals Manchester City who missed the services of Sergio Aguero on the day were 2-0 up within 40 minutes and though Zlatan pulled one back, the Red Devils were not able to find an equalizer and lost all three points on the night.
One of the players who was subbed off early in the game is Jesse Lingard. The 23-year old has made a decent start to his campaign under the new manager and made his comeback in this game after and injury.
He has been a decent performer for Manchester United for more than a season now and was extensively used by the Louis van Gaal in the fag end of his final season in England.
Lingard joined the Manchester United academy a few years ago and has made enough of an impact to make the first team in the previous season.
He has already scored a number of important goals for the club and has impressed the new manager to find a place in the starting XI in the Manchester derby.
And it is now understood that Mourinho wants the 23-year old to stay at the club for years to come.
According to recent reports, Manchester United are readying a contract extension for the midfielder and are hopeful that they can tie him to the club for a long time.
The reports suggest that Lingard is close to accepting a new 4-year deal at the club that will keep him at Old Trafford till 2020.
Lingard, who last made an appearance for United in the Community Shield before the derby, was influential in Mourinho winning his first silverware at Old Trafford.
So it is understandable that Mourinho has his eyes set on the midfielder for the long term.
Do you think Jesse Lingard will be a great player in the future?
