FIFA World Cup is undoubtedly one of the biggest events in world sports. But it is the pinnacle for any footballer and there is nothing bigger than representing his country on the biggest stage.

However, not everyone is so successful in the crunch moments as many of them get intimidated with the stage. Perhaps, this differs legends from ordinary ones. So, here we look at the top 5 footballers to have scored highest number of goals at the World Cup.

5. Pele

One of the greatest players of all time, Pele was considered amongst the very best in football history. The Brazilian legend was sensational in the World Cup and has won three world cups during his time.

He took part in four different world cups between 1958-1970. He managed to score 12 goals in 14 World Cup matches which made him the 5th highest goal scorer of all time in world cups.

4. Just Fontaine

One of the most underrated strikers during his time, Just Fontaine set ablaze the 1958 world cup edition. He participated in only one world cup but he left his mark on the mega tournament.

Representing France, Fontaine scored an unbelievable 13 goals in just 6 games in 1958. This made him the fourth highest goal scorer of all time in world cup history.

Although, he spent all his life in France playing for Nice and Reims in top flight, Fontaine will be long cherished for his unique feat. He still holds the record for most goals by a single player in a single edition.

3. Gerd Muller

One of the cornerstones in German football, Gerd Muller was a goal scoring machine. His days at Bayern Munich has helped the club to reach the status that it possesses now. On the other hand, he was no less prolific for the national team either.

Most importantly, he always rose to the occasion and scored goals both for the club and his country. He played in 1970, 1974 world cups and scored 14 goals in just 13 games. His efforts propelled Germany to title in 1974, while they finished third in 1970.

2. Ronaldo Nazario

One of the greatest strikers of all time, Ronaldo Nazario di Lima reinvented the way strikers should play. The phenomenon he created had inspired many other footballers like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Neymar.

The Brazilian was an artist at dribbling and going past defenders at ease. He also did a considerable job in the world cups. In the 19 games he played between 1994-2006, Ronaldo scored 15 goals. The man left a mark on the game and had inspired many young budding footballers during his time.

The German legend was one of the key figures in his country’s success since the start of 21st century. Although the World Cup eluded him three times, Klose managed to win it in his final world cup at Brazil.

He also did it in style by becoming the highest goal scorer of all time in world cup history. He managed to play an impressive 24 games at world cups and ultimately scored 16 goals. He has recently joined as a coach at FC Bayern U-17 side.
