After the victory in the semi-final over Villarreal and the 2-0 victory over Watford in the weekend, the month just keeps getting better for Liverpool after club legend Steven Gerrard opened up about his future in a recent interview.
The 35-year old left his boyhood club at the end of the last season after 17 years of service and is currently plying his trade in the US playing for the MLS franchise LA Galaxy.
He has been an integral part of the squad and has found some form in the second season. He recently came off the bench and scored a ripper but has now come out and said that he will be heading back to Anfield ‘sooner rather than later’.
Speaking at a fans’ question and answer session at LA Galaxy’s stadium Gerrard revealed that he missed his stint in England and that he will be back to the country at some point.
He was aware of speculations that his statement might cause and was alert to point it out.
“I don’t want to start any unnecessary rumours. I’m really happy where I am at the moment. But I’m sure somewhere down the line I will represent Liverpool Football Club,” he said bringing cheers to the club’s fans all across the world.
He also revealed that he misses the 35 years he spent at the Merseyside and that though at the moment, LA is his home, it is just temporary and that he is always a true Red.
“I miss my friends and my family. I miss a bit of cold weather.”
“I miss going to the games. I spent 35 years in Liverpool. Liverpool’s my home, it always will be. This is my second home for a short period of time,” he added.
Hr finished pointing out that he feels safe and at home at Liverpool and that he is looking forward to making a comeback to the club in some ability if not as a player.
“Sooner rather than later I will return to where I’m comfortable with my people – and that’s Liverpool.”
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will hardly have a problem adding such a personality to his squad or even to his coaching staff and with things looking bright already at Anfield, Gerrard can be the man who can help Liverpool take the next step.
But it is hard to imagine him coming back as a player, wearing a Liverpool shirt and thumping goals in from 40-yeards out given his age and lack of consistent game time.
Do you think Gerrard can return to Liverpool as a player?
