The January transfer window has barely slammed shut and talks about summer reinforcements are already in the air. Perhaps it is a chance for clubs to right the wrongs of January and move forward with a hope of tying up everything in the summer. Here we look at the possible summer signings for Liverpool.
- YANN M’VILA (Rubin Kazan)
Liverpool have one of the worst midfields on paper of all the big clubs fighting it out at the top and will desperately need to bolster their ranks to have any chance of moving forward. Their only saving grace has been their splendid forwards and if they can add a solid, box-to-box midfielder to shield the defense as well as playing out a few passes, they should look no further than the 23-year-old Yann M’Vila. The Rubin Kazan star has had an eventful first few years at the very top, and although his attitude is a bit of a dampener, he perfectly fits the bill as far as transfer fees are concerned. M’Vila is a terrier, and would bed in seamlessly at Anfield. He was spotted last year in the director’s box when he was invited over by his good friend and international teammate Mamadou Sakho.
- MARTIN MONTOYA (FC Barcelona)
The no-nonsense Catalan has had scouts purring as he made his bow in the blue and red of Barcelona last season. Montoya is quick, athletic and has a good attacking sense. He has been linked umpteen numbers of times to Liverpool over the past few months, although a deal did not materialize in the winter. Glen Johnson has so far been abject this current season and looks injury-prone as he gets on the wrong side of the thirties. Montoya would be the ideal FSG signing; young and talented with not-too-high a price tag. And the fact that he has the mercurial Dani Alves ahead of him in the Barca pecking order plays to the Reds’ advantage. - YEVHEN KONOPLYANKA (FC Dnipro)
One of the players who almost joined Liverpool in January before the wheels fell out of the deal, Konoplyanka would’ve represented a marquee signing to boost the Reds’ assault on the much-coveted fourth place. Primarily a winger, the dynamic Konoplyanka would add pace of all things to Liverpool’s front line, plus quality service too. But at 15 million pounds, he represents a gamble having played nowhere other than the lesser Ukrainian league. Konoplyanka would add a new dimension to Rodgers’ Liverpool, but whether they follow him up in the summer is everyone’s to guess. Not a necessity, but would please the fans anyway.
