The January transfer window has barely slammed shut and talks about summer reinforcements are already in the air. Perhaps it is a chance for clubs to right the wrongs of January and move forward with a hope of tying up everything in the summer. Here we look at the possible summer signings for Manchester City.
- ELIAQUIM MANGALA (FC Porto)
It was reported in the wee hours of February 1st that Porto’s imposing center half Eliaquim Mangala missed out on a Manchester City transfer by a whisker. City already have a solid defensive pairing of Vincent Komapany and Matija Nastasic, only that they have played together very infrequently and Nastasic doesn’t fit the bill of a finished article. Mangala could bed in well with Kompany at the heart of City’s defense; with reports emerging that Joleon Lescott could be offloaded in the summer. It leaves Manuel Pellegrini with only one reserve center back in the ageing Martin Demichelis and he would do well to cash in on the highly-rated defender.
- DOMENICO BERARDI (Sassuolo)
Italian starlet Berardi shot into prominence this season with newly-promoted Sassuolo when he famously scored all four goals in a rout of giants AC Milan in Serie A. Since then, his star and stock has risen to unprecedented heights; even prompting City to make enquiries about a summer move. Berardi could yet make his way into Cesare Prandelli’s Italy squad for the World Cup, and a deal before the mega event would be a great one for the Citizens. Although there are complications galore in the player’s contract; Juventus hold a 50% co-ownership right over Berardi, City’s deep pockets might well tempt Juve to let him leave.
- BACARY SAGNA (Arsenal)
City were surprisingly linked with Sagna over the winter transfer window and why not; after all they love buying from Arsenal, don’t they? City have faced a few problems in right back whenever Pablo Zabaleta remains unavailable, and Sagna could be a good back-up to the versatile Argentine. Micah Richards’ City career seems all but over, and Sagna could bring in experience as well as quality to the already quality-laden City squad. Whether he settles for a fringe role at City remains the big question as of now.
