It was the dream draw as far as Sutton were concerned.
The non-league side will face Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth-round next month after just days after the Gunners have travelled to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
And if the Premier League giants thought Sutton’s plastic pitch could prove difficult, they haven’t seen anything yet.
That’s because the Sutton changing rooms are a far cry from anything the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are used to.
Somehow we can’t imagine Sanchez, Ozil and Hector Bellerin hanging around for an ice bath.
By seeing off old foes Leeds on Saturday afternoon, Sutton United barrelled their way into the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in the club’s history.
After being knocked out in the fourth round before on two occasions (once against Leeds in 1970, and then again against Norwich in 1989), The U’s broke new ground to ensure that there would be two non-league clubs in the fifth round draw – also an all-time first.
Of course, Sutton’s herculean victory was immortalised with an array of traditional, steamy-lensed, Champagne-sopped ‘celebrating in the dressing room’ photos, but there is another image that perhaps better sums up the true magnitude of their achievement.
Sutton have also ruled out the possibility of switching their dream FA Cup tie with Arsenal away from their Gander Green Lane ground.
Sutton will not look to expand the 5,000 capacity of Gander Green Lane for the visit of Arsenal.
The non-League club estimate the tie will be worth around £400,000 to them, taking the money they earned from their FA Cup run close to £750,000.
Arsenal will have to adapt to the 3G pitch at Sutton. Doswell said: “I have got a 35-year-old in Simon Downer, a brilliant non-League centre-half. If Simon can play on it, anyone can play on it. It is a fantastic surface and they will not mind playing on it.
“I watched them play Southampton with their supposed FA Cup team and they won 5-0. Can we cause them problems? I think you can work that one out. I cannot even think about beating Arsenal, I am still trying to get my head around playing them.”
In a fifth-round draw full of intriguing ties, Fulham host Tottenham, Millwall will be at home to either Leicester or Derby and Chelsea are away at Wolves.
