Interesting – John Terry backs Sterling to QUIT Liverpool
Former English international and Chelsea captain John Terry has defended Liverpool star Raheem Sterling over his desire to leave Anfield in search of silverware. The 34-year old says that the England international “wants to play at the very top for the very best.”
The 20-year old has been under transfer speculation after rejecting a new contract offered by the Reds which would see him earn £100,000-per-week. The player’s agent has made the situation more complex by commenting that his client would not sign a new contract at Liverpool even if it is worth £900,000-per-week.
Reports suggest that Manchester City are the front runners to sign the talented winger as they want to add key English talent to their roster despite chances of them getting sanctioned under Financial Fair Play regulations.
The 20-year old still has two years left in his contract at Anfield but Liverpool are willing to let the player go only if a bid around £50 million arrives from a potential suitor. Terry thinks Champions League football could be the reason for the player to move away from Liverpool.
He said, “Raheem has taken a bit of stick recently, but I was really impressed by him. I didn’t realise how good he was until I played against him three or four times. He’s an exceptional player.
“At times he’s been unfairly treated this year with the press he’s got. He’s a young player and wants to play at the very top for the very best. He’s got ambitions to play in the Champions League and continue playing for his country.”
Manchester City are keen to spend big on valuable additions this summer but Terry thinks Arsenal and Manchester United would be serious contenders as well next season.
“Man City was a little way off this year so they may feel that they have to strengthen a little more than everybody else, but I think Arsenal and Man United are going to be strong this year as well,” he said.
